Somerville ApartmentsSomerville is a town located north east of Cambridge, and northwest of Boston on the North side of the Charles River. Somerville generally has slighly lower priced apartments than Cambridge, yet still has access to subway trains for student and professional commuters into the city. Somerville is one of Massachusetts more popular cities, with just under 100,000 residents. Somerville is known to be home to blue-collar residents and students. During the late 1980's Somerville went through a distressed period where auto thefts and the crime rate overall rose significantly. More recently, since the late 1990's, this number has dropped dramatically due to grassroots and community efforts to ensure a safer living environment for residents. Davis Square is a beautiful area of Somerville that is home to the Somerville Theater, JP Licks Ice Cream and Mr. Crepe Creperie. Colleges & Universities Notable Univerisities in the area are Harvard University (technically in Cambridge, but many off campus students live in Somerville) and Lesley University. Students benefit greatly in somerville since rent is lower than cambridge, and on campus housing for these universities is always more expensive than deals found off campus. Subway Access The MBTA red line subway runs through Cambridge and Somerville. The more popular stops in Somerville are Porter Square and Davis Square. The Porter Square T stop is located on Massachusetts ave or 'Mass Ave' which is one of Boston and Cambridges most populare streets. It runs over the Massachussetts Avenue Bridge which connects Boston with Cambridge, and it's is a major connection between numerous bus routes, college campuses, and popular areas of each local community. Apartment Rentals Somerville prices are approximately 5-10% less than you'd find in Cambridge. For example, a 1 Bedroom apartment in Cambridge that rents for $1400 might rent for $1250-1300 in Somerville. While it's not significantly lower, there are added perks for living in Somerville. Usually parking is cheaper if not free altogether, the nightlife is more local and simple (not as crowded), and restaurants aren't as difficult to get reservations for. Depending on the season and market, studios in somerville will rent for about $700-900, and 1 Beds will rent for $1,000 - $1,400.
